Why wasn't the Mac version released for free as well some people were wondering.

The reason this is so is because the Apple operating system has no easy to use completely free virtualization program. Now there are open source products and a few non complete solutions (VMware) but nothing that is a total free solution to running OSes easily from the users point of view with little or no set up.
---
Microsoft has dominated that market because of there brand name recognition. I have a teacher that had a g4 based Mac and ran Virtual PC he didn't mind paying them for the software because he had extra money to spend. Microsoft knows the Mac market better. Mac users will pay more to have things that look pretty/work "the best"/ or just pay more for the same hardware branded as Apple.
---
THE MOST IMPORTANT POINT SKIP DOWN TO HERE IN THIS ARTICLE

The people who would be upset at paying for virtualization software are not the ones who would buy it anyway.

Think about it, if someone knows what "virtualization" and an "operating system" is they most likely can find alternative ways to use open source emulators and set them up themselves. The clientele that Microsoft is interested in making pay are the people who don't know/care about open source and have money to spend.
